Marc's Big Boy Classic Double Deck Cheeseburger (Wisconsin Version)

Recipe makes one burger. Adjust accordingly.

1/4 pound ground beef
Salt and pepper, to taste
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 teaspoons relish
2 teaspoons tomato sauce (plain, not seasoned)
1 soft, sesame seed hamburger bun
Half of additional hamburger bun (preferably bottom half)
1/4 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
1 slice American cheese

Divide beef in half, place between two pieces of wax paper, and press each piece into 4-inch round patty. Freeze.

Combine the mayonnaise, relish, and tomato sauce. Reserve.

Toast the bun pieces in a hot oven or in a pan over medium heat.

Lightly salt and pepper each patty (they can be cooked frozen - in fact, it's easier if they are) and cook in a hot frying pan over high heat for about 2 minutes per side.

Assembly: Spread sauce on the middle and bottom buns. Stack the lettuce on the bottom bun. Place cheese on the lettuce. Place 1 beef patty on the cheese, followed by the middle bun, sauce side up. Place the second beef patty on the middle bun and top off with the top bun.

Note: Thousand Island dressing can be substituted for the sauce mixture.
